Queen Estelle sat in a plush, high backed chair, swirling a glass of wine in lazy circles before the decadent fireplace in her personal chambers. Eyes the color of steel stared into the low flames.
You stood at the door, at attention, with a hand on the pommel of your sword. You were new to this posting, only transferred to guarding the Queenly person this past week. As such, you have spent most of your time standing guard, glaring at passersby in the hallways, and otherwise trying to stay out of her way. This was a cursed posting, you'd always heard, and everyone who has been in the position has quit within a month.
"You need not loom so, good sir," the Queen eventually said, her soft voice rising above the crackling flames. "I assure you that my rugs and blankets are quite unlikely to cause me harm."
It's only then that you noticed her gaze had lifted to the mirror on the mantle, watching you with a wry smirk.
"Come, speak with me," she mused, patting the arm of her chair.

The castle in the kingdom of Ferronvale. A delegation from a neighboring country is set to arrive soon and the queen is up to mischief.
The Queen sat at her window, overlooking the sprawling city below from one of the high towers of the Ferronvale castle. Katrin, her handmaiden, ran a gilded comb through the Queen's hair, a gentle morning ritual that Queen Estelle always looked forward to.
"Look there, Katrin," Queen Estelle murmured, her voice dreamy and low. She lifted a ringed finger to point out a caravan leaving the city through the main gate. "That would be the delegation from Reshi, back to their black forest."
"Indeed, Your Radiance," Katrin hummed, barely sparing the caravan a glance. "Your lord husband was unsuccessful in garnering their favor, then?"
Queen Estelle scoffed, setting her dainty hand back down onto her lap. "Of course not. The oaf could hardly go two sentences without offending the viceroy. I scarcely had to do a thing."
"A boring evening, then," the handmaid said. There was no need to make a question of it, the Queen's penchant for political maneuvering at the expense of her husband was well known among her personal staff.
"Positively dreadful. Would that he'd done any research into Reshi culture at all, he might have secured a decent alliance." Estelle sighed, and leaned back in her seat to let Katrin finish the brushing. "I smoothed things over after, at least. The Reshi will return for secondary talks in a few months."
"Should I arrange for a gift to be sent to the black forest?" Katrin asked with a grin in her voice that never reached her lips.
"Please do, dear. I'd rather it be something practical, as the Reshi care little for frivolities." Queen Estelle opened one steel colored eye and peeked over her shoulder. "A few mythril edged wagon wheels will do nicely."
Katrin nodded, setting the brush aside and gathering the Queen's hair into a tight bun. "It will be done, Your Radiance."
